Chapter 5:
Living Your Truth is Sexy
In my first book, Authentically Me, I talk a lot about living your truth, not because it was a trending topic, but because for so long I didn’t live my truth. My definition of living your truth is being honest about who you are and where you are right now in life. Living your truth means coming out of denial. I was very familiar with denial. As the wife of a popular pastor in the community, I lived in the public. To everyone else, our life was perfect. I knew it wasn’t, but I wanted to believe it, too. So I pretended everything was okay and failed to reach out to get serious help for fear of exposure. Basically, my ego got in the way of my healing. As a result, I went through depression, had suicidal thoughts and self-hate for not having the courage to bring about change in my life. I just thought if I prayed long and hard things would change, and my husband would miraculously become my best friend. That never happened. But to the admiring onlookers, we had a great relationship. Only I knew better. It wasn’t until after the divorce that I realized that all along in my marriage I was abandoning myself by ignoring my needs, ignoring my pain and ignoring my problems. As I started to finally deal with the reality of this failed marriage, I began to live my truth by simply being honest. As I became more honest with myself, although I was going through a painful divorce, I was finally able to breathe. I didn’t have to pretend anymore. I didn’t have to lie to myself or others anymore. I was free to face my truth and get the healing I needed.
Can you imagine not being able to breathe for a long time and then finally being able to let out a sigh of relief? If you’ve ever had allergies or asthma you may know what I mean and if you’ve ever worn a tight fitting girdle you really know what I mean! I’m so thankful for the invention of girdles. They are my best friends some days because I don’t like to starve myself. I love to eat. I know we are not supposed to live to eat, but we are supposed to eat to live. But I like to enjoy my food even when it is healthy. I like all of my taste buds to be engaged when I eat anything sweet, salty or savory. And I don’t do diets either. So if I want to get into a fitted little black dress, all I have to do is go to the drawer and get one of my body reshaping garments. I call them under armor and they work like magic every time. But the downside to them is that they can be very uncomfortable. I have one that is a super slimmer. But in addition to reshaping my figure, I am fairly certain it shifts my internal organs, too.
